Jin Gui Yao Lue (Synopsis of the Golden Chamber)
Jin Gui Yao Lue (Synopsis of the Golden Chamber) is a pivotal component of Shang Han Za Bing Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases), authored by the Eastern Han dynasty physician Zhang Zhongjing. Alongside Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage), it forms the cornerstone of clinical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The original text was later compiled and edited, with its sections discussing internal and gynecological diseases gathered into Jin Gui Yao Lue Fang Lun, commonly known as Jin Gui Yao Lue. This work established the complete clinical TCM system of pattern differentiation, treatment, theory, method, formula, and medicinals. It specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of miscellaneous diseases centered on organ and meridian theory. Revered as the "foundational text of formulas," it is the core classic for treating internal damage and miscellaneous diseases in TCM.

Shang Han Za Bing Lun was compiled in the late Eastern Han dynasty but was later scattered due to warfare. It was reconstructed by Wang Shuhe in the Western Jin dynasty and later officially collated and published by the Song dynasty Bureau for the Revision of Medical Texts. This process ultimately separated it into two books: Shang Han Lun (focusing mainly on externally contracted febrile diseases) and Jin Gui Yao Lue (focusing mainly on internal damage and miscellaneous diseases) for circulation. Jin Gui Yao Lue contains 25 chapters, covering over 40 kinds of diseases, and includes more than 200 formulas. It spans internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, emergency treatment, and dietary contraindications, with its content closely centered on organ pathogenesis.

1. Organ & Meridian Pattern Differentiation System: It pioneered a theoretical framework for pattern differentiation centered on organ pathogenesis, integrated with the Eight Principles. It emphasizes that disease onset and progression are closely related to organ dysfunction and the obstruction of meridian qi and blood.

2. Integration of Disease, Pulse, Pattern, & Treatment: Each chapter is typically titled with the sequence "Disease, Pulse, Pattern, Treatment," combining disease classification, typical pulse signs, symptomatic manifestations, and specific treatment methods and formulas. This reflects a rigorous clinical thought process.

3. The Highest Model of Formula Science: The formulas it records—such as Gui Zhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction), Ma Huang Tang (Ephedra Decoction), Shen Qi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill), and Yin Chen Hao Tang (Virgate Wormwood Decoction)—are meticulously composed, concise in ingredients, and remarkably effective. They laid the foundation for TCM formula science, and their composition principles remain the standard for clinical herbal prescription today.

4. Preventive Treatment & Proactive Health Ideas: It clearly proposes the concept of preventing disease progression, as seen in the principle "seeing liver disease, one knows it will transmit to the spleen, and should therefore first strengthen the spleen." It also emphasizes preventive concepts like dietary regulation and avoiding pathogenic influences.

Jin Gui Yao Lue decisively directed TCM theory toward clinical practice. Its principle—"observe the pulse and patterns, know what pathogenic factor is transgressing, and treat according to the pattern"—became the fundamental rule of TCM clinical diagnosis and treatment. It is essential reading for TCM practitioners. The formulas (classical formulas) it records are still widely used and studied today, their efficacy validated through long-term practical application. This text and Shang Han Lun complement each other, jointly constructing a complete diagnostic and treatment system for externally contracted and internally damaged diseases in TCM. It has also profoundly influenced Japanese Kampo medicine and Korean medicine.
